Book excerpt: A self contained, air-droppable, Expendable, Remote-Operating Weather Station (EROWS) has been developed to obtain information on several basic meteorological parameters from those areas where such data are either limited or otherwise unattainable. The EROWS vehicle and its associated sensors are described in detail, along with a functional description of the control-recorder, aircraft repeater, and aircraft dispenser that constitute the remaining components of the complete system. The results of field tests of EROWS units conducted at several locations are described. The testing indicates that the system performed satisfactorily under a wide variety of conditions. (Author).
